Control of water pollution
Water is one of the precious resource but in the present scenario this resource is under great threat and become a matter of great concern throughout the globe. Humans have polluted the water resources beyond expectation if this will continue and if no royal step is taken, no doubt in the near feature this problem become even worse this will not affect the humans but all other living creatures which finally create an ecological imbalance. Keeping this in view control of water pollution should be on the top of our priorities. As we know that sources of water pollution come from two sources point and non-point source. the former can be controlled easily whereas latter one is bit difficult. Control of the point source pollutants should be achieved by adopting the procedure of end of pipe controls and process control.
Following control measures should be taken into consideration
- Domestic waste should not be thrown directly into water bodies.
- Domestic sewage generated from kitchens, bathrooms toilets etc. should not be directed into water bodies instead it should be treated in water treatment plants, furthermore sanitary sewers should be constructed by employing modern engineering techniques.
- The effluents discharged from the industries must be pretreated before discharging into water bodies a number of techniques are employed in this connection
- Agricultural wastes are considered as non-point source pollution because they spread over a vast area from where a number of chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides. Carried away with runoff, to tackle this problem certain techniques such as mulching, contour ploughing, crop rotation etc. are quite handy in reduction of runoff. further Integrated Pest management (IPM) should be our first choice.
- Sanitary landfill sites should de designed by adopting modern engineering techniques with zero negligence during construction in order to avoid any leakage.
- Non degradable waste should be disposed of properly.
- According to EPA green infrastructure approach should be employed to minimize water pollution caused by storm water.
- Afforestation should be done along/around the water bodies to decrease the chances of soil erosion.
- Rainwater harvesting should be practiced to prevent the depletion of water table.
- Awareness among people is one of the best strategy to minimize water pollution.
- Riparian zones, wetlands should be protected because they play an immense role in controlling water pollution.
- Polluter pay principal should be implemented.
- Plantation should be done around agricultural fields which act as a buffer zone.
- Use of detergents should be minimized or replaced by phosphate free or nonphosphate detergents
- Bioremediation and phytoremediation should be done in which certain special animals and plants are used which have the ability to reduce water pollution by engulfing them.
- Use of environmentally safe products should be encouraged among common masses.
- Water should be conserved it help in reducing the contaminated water.
